A Mongolian bike trip will color your thinking forever, whether it's a wide open desert ride with spectacular red rock vistas or a lush green mountain trail lined with colorful wild flowers. Sure, bicycling in Mongolia can be extreme, pitting a rider's ability against the challenge of high elevated passes, or steep alpine trails. But there are scenic rides in every area of the country accessible to every age and ability. Central Mongolia provides plenty of opportunity for cyclists, both on-road and off. Road cyclists enjoy the rout to Karakorum where the paved road ends, 380 km south west of Ulaanbaatar. Further excellent mountain bike terrains await everywhere. One route takes through Orkhon valley, to the west of Karakorum. This riverside riding with various interesting stops is excellent. North of Karakorum are many fat-tyre favorites on forested mountain trails. Another fantastic ride can be in the northern Mongolia, from pristine alpine lake of Hovsgol to Ulaanbaatar or vice versa passing small towns and farming communities. This northern portion of the country is an easy ride on mostly flat terrain and partially has excellent paved roads. The best time for biking in Mongolia is the period between late May and September when it is warm and the terrain covered with lush green meadows.
